- “...I
come back to the chant as a further way to probe the song form, to
make melody mine own, and the more my singing looks technically non
super-structured, the more I wish that the expression would be
intimate and authentic, my feelings neither hidden nor increased, my
soul naked...”

- "Stefano
Pastor might be called an expressive mimic. While his primary focus
is jazz, he has worked in classical and rock, giving him a broad
stylistic knowledge from which to draw, as is evident in his playing
on and conception for his CD, Songs (...) Through much of the
CD, Pastor has a warmly sawing tone in the tradition of Stuff Smith
and Billy Bang. But playing Jimi Hendrix gives him a chance to put
the fiddle to the metal. Forced through a fuzzbox, his violin
returns a fantastic sound (...) Songs is an immensely
likeable record."

- "Stefano
Smith e Billy Bang. Ma suonando Jimi Hendrix dimostra come il
violino possa adattarsi al metal. Forzato attraverso un distorsore,
il suo strumento restituisce un suono fantastico (...) Songs
è un lavoro enormemente piacevole."

- "Perhaps this wonderful
sonic adventure by the avantgard violinist Pastor could be inspired
by Mario Schiano: the active saxophone player from Napoli loved to
alternate the instrument with the voice, clean and melodic as well.
On Songs everything (even drums, wind instruments,
synthesizers, organ) has been «rebuilded» by Pastor's violin, with
inventions worthy of a sonic alchemist: this is to shroud an
angel voice that gives melodic touches which
strongly remind of Chet Baker's «breath»..."

In Songs
Baker..."

- "...the Ligurian violinist
makes this trip inside his path of research on the instrument and on
the voice. It's an original reworking of the song-form in which
Pastor is totally at home. The disc includes six pieces gathered
from different repertoires: jazz, rock and Brazilian popular music.
A work only based on violin, on singing (...) Song is an
excellent disc, to consider as the natural evolution of the previous
solo work titled Chants"

- "a different exploration
which consists of an extention of the work that Stefano Pastor
pursues since lots of years ago in different situations, concerning
of the research around the violin's timbre. And the instrument is
modified in a way that it plays like something really different. In

- "A disc for only violin and
vocals. Nevertheless, thanks to the overdubbing, one can hear
walking bass lines, brushed drums obtained rubbing the violin's body
with a toothbrush, leading saxophone like or flute like phrases,
string sessions, distorted electric guitars, synthesizer simulations
and other sounds. An extreme and fascinating conception, an
unorthodox approach to the instrument but not oriented, as one could
think, in an only improvised situation (...) a deep and definitely
original research into the improvisation and a complete rebuilding
of the songs, respecting the themes' melodic lines."

- "Un disco per soli voce e
violino.
flautistica, sezioni d'archi, chitarre elettriche distorte,

- "Pastor rises himself to
scene director and sound conductor for the six songs included on
this new solo album. The violin multiplies itself. It's
accompainist, colorist, soloist, soldier. And it's always
insatiable. It scrapes the string until the breaking point devoting
itself to evocate I Got Rhythm
by Gershwin. Adorns itself with an obsessive and painful romanticism
when invokes Brazil (Beatriz,
Quem E Vocé). Becomes furious when appears the wonderful Purple
Haze by Hendrix. And
finds again the main way of a strange jazz - moving nevertheless -
when You Go To My Head and
Duke
Ellington’s Sound of Love orient its path. Nothing
revolutionary here but over all, an originality not to miss."

tuttavia toccante - quando You Go To My Head e Duke
perdere."

- "...he sings relaxed, almost
indifferent to the sonic nebula which revolves around him, while the
violin's solo acquires saxophonist shapes. The Hendrix's song Purple
Haze seems a Steve Vai's alcoholic frenzy, but the violinistic
transposition multiplies its allucinated restlessness. The choise of
end with Duke Ellington’s Sound Of
Love by Charles Mingus is original and symbolic: to gather two jazz
giants who loved the big bands and enclose them into the sound of a
lonely instrument which blows like the tenor sax of George
Adams."

- "...canta in surplace, quasi
George Adams."

- "...Pastor is an extraordinary
violin player who doesn't find the well deserved space in Italy. Songs
is the continuation of Chants, and consists of six songs from
jazz repertoire, rock and mpb reread in solo using the superimposition
of lots of 'violin layers'. All the sounds here are produced using the
violin as a maker of melodies, rhythms, timbers, noises, demonstrating
creativity, versatility and exquisite taste between experimental and
interpretational styles. Four strings and a bow to transform Gershwin
and Hendrix exploring the song form (...) Pastor knows how to
enhance the melodies bringing them into a transforming process full of
tension."

meriterebbe. Songs è la prosecuzione di Chants, e
vede sei canzoni di provenienza jazz, rock e mpb rilette in
solitudine mediante la sovrapposizione di più 'strati
violinistici'. Tutti i suoni provengono dallo strumento usato come
forma-canzone (...) Pastor sa esaltare le melodie proiettandole
verso una tensiva trasformazione."

- "...A solo album is always a
complicated work, starting with the choice of the repertoire. In this
case the work seems to be more difficault because of the fact that every
sound here is uniquely produced by the violin and considering that
Pastor is not a singer as one can deduce by listening. However the
risult is more than satisfactory. Firstly, the violinist here doesn't
make the mistake, so typical with this instrument, of showing that
orthodox virtuosity consisting in enhancing fast playing continuously.
On the contrary Pastor is able to obtain from the strings of his violin
different sounds, making the recording's sound palette larger. In this
way he adopts different roles such as rhythmic, melodic, includin
percussive which appear in the several overdubs that characterize this
work. Secondly, he changes the approach to each of the themes. So, while
in some cases he keeps himself close to the original version or
conformed to the melody, in other cases he uses the theme as an occasion
for opening improvisational spaces."

In
In
In secondo luogo varia l'approccio a ciascuno
l'improvvisazione."

- "Songs is virtuoso Italian
violinist Stefano Pastor's attempt to explore song form through his solo
violin, aided only by different sound processors and his voice (...) On
this album, Pastor deconstructs and reconstructs the melodies of six
well-known songs in an attempt to claim their melodies as his own. He
has the technical sophistication and boundless energy to rearrange the
jazz standard of George and Ira Gershwin's 'I Got Rhythm' into a an
impressive and dense technical tour-de-force (...) The distortion-laden
arrangement of Jimi Hendrix's 'Purple Haze' proves that a violin can
follow the legendary guitarist's exact guitar lines, 45 years after the
original performance of the song (...) On his arrangements of two
Brazilian songs, 'Beatriz' and 'Quem è você', he sings softly and emotionally.
J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie's 'You Go to My Head' and Charles
Mingus' 'Duke Ellington's Sound of Love' both receive similar, sensitive
arrangements. The use of electronic devices on these songs assists
Pastor in transfiguring the sound of the violin, turning his
arrangements and elaborate improvisations into a multitude of carefully
arranged orchestral sounds."

brasiliane, 'Beatriz'
and 'Quem è você', egli
canta in modo soffice e ricco di emozione. 'You Go to My Head' di J.
Fred Coots e Haven Gillespie e 'Duke Ellington's Sound of Love' di
Charles Mingus ricevono entrambe simili, delicati arrangiamenti. L'uso
orchestrali."

- "...The violinist seems to put
himself in front of the instrument as if he would be studing all the
expressive possibilities from the zero grade, serching the unprecedented
(...) The approach all along the disc looks deeply Hendrix influenced,
in the meaning of a prior consideration of the instrument not as an
extention of his own himself but as an unknown object to experiment
regardless of the tradition or of the idea of sound which is exceedingly
deep-rooted in us when we think to the violin (...) A typical jazz
proceeding in its philosophy:
to start from an instrument to pull out a new voice (...) the violin
assumes the role of percussion, funky bass and on You Go To My Head
it even turns into a saxophone!!! It seems clear that Pastor knows the
history of this wind instrument regarding ballad interpretation; his
violin turns into a tenor saxophone in a way close to Ben Webster or
Zoot Sims and it follows their styles and the solos. A masterwork
for a little-played tune in which Pastor shows an undoubted personality
and this is the best talent that a musician can get."

strumento percussivo, da basso funky e in You Go To My Head si
trasforma addirittura in sassofono!!! Evidentemente a Pastor non sfugge
la storia che ha questo strumento nell’interpretazione della ballata;
talenti."

lots of overdubs) through just few songs coming out from
different sources such as Gershwin, Chico Buarque, Hendrix, Mingus.
Six tunes in which Pastor sings, with that feeble voice, a bit
stentorean that makes remember in a certain way the voice of the last
Chet Baker. This besides handling his violin (clarifying that all the
sounds are produced only by the violin). The results are remarkable
particularly on the odd traks (but also the even are good) in which
the superimposition of the different instrumental voices creates
interesting surprises."

qualche misura l’ultimo Chet Baker. Gli esiti sono rimarchevoli
soprattutto nei brani dispari (I Got Rhythm, Quem é

carità – l’intrecciarsi delle varie voci strumentali genera
sorprese non di poco conto."

- "Listening to this disc, a solo
production by the violin player from Genoa Stefano Pastor, put the
listener in good mood because of the quality and the depth of what he
is able to offer, beyond the classic legacy of this instrument. And is
just this distance from his basic culture to make so beautiful this
recording in which re-arranges jazz standard tunes, songs from
Brasilian repertoire and Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix (...) His
feeble voice sings the well-known lyrics accompanied by sounds that
immediatly show off as very singular, peculiar then turned into
improvisations in which appears the real soul of this musician (...)
Pastor demonstrates an inspired choice in the way in which he oversees
the whole sonic building: he has a remarkable sense of architecture
(...) Beatriz is a little masterwork setted into territoirs
pretty close to the ones loved by the trumpet player John Hassell. A
stroke of genius that shows the musical knowledge of the violinist.
The disc offers indeed
surprises at every track. The “spatial”
dissonances on Quem è Voce would
be agreed even by some Kraut Rock exponent. Again the voice on a Chet
Baker's favourite tune with the same feeling and an original string
accompaniement. The last two songs are a full of energy version of the
well-known title by Jimi Hendrix and one of the most beautiful
compositions by Charles Mingus, Duke
Ellington´s Sound of Love, played by different groups led by the
bass player. Here the solo version, without overdubbing, enhances the
sound of the violin, in his hands almost a saxophone, and the
beautiful melody so poetic and intense. The disc has been builded
slowly in different places and times. The result of long sessions
spent in recording and put the traks together. This is one of those
CDs which make history of music on this instrument."

contrabbassista.
lentamente, in diversi luoghi e tempi.

fascinating work: haunting, aggressive, at times disturbing. A technical
marvel as well. On You Go To My Head, Pastor captures the song's
mental and emotional turmoil better than any other version I can recall."

"Un lavoro affascinante: ammaliante,
aggressivo, a volte inquietante. E pure una meraviglia tecnica. In You Go
To My Head, Pastor rende il disagio mentale ed emozionale espresso dalla
canzone meglio che in qualunque altra versione che io ricordi."
