- "Lines
which are straight or curved, soft or spiky, are drawn by the
instruments and occupy space by expanding or suffocating – not in a
negative way – the music itself intended as a spatial manifestation.
In construction, of construction, construction of music: indicating the
specific meaning of the term but also, in a reflexive way, music
building itself. It is space and builds space. It is space and becomes
part of space. Poetic, musical, sound space. Within and throughout a
spectrum of geographies and geometries from which emerge twilights and
shadows, cracks and oscillations, incisions and decisions."

rette e curve, morbide e spigolose tracciate dagli strumenti
In
costruzione, di costruzione. Costruzione della musica: nel senso di
specificazione ma anche e soprattutto riflessivo. La musica
costruisce sé stessa. È spazio ed edifica spazio. È spazio e
diventa parte dello spazio. Poetico, musicale, sonoro. Entro e
crepuscoli e ombre, crepe e oscillazioni, incisioni e
decisioni."

- "...one
can perceive a musical and emotional crescendo, of mutual
interaction, perhaps stimulated by a fast becoming aware of the musical
space and the nutual relationship. From the opening track Catena
- conceived in a vaguely bachian style - to the central,
epigrammatic A Tutto Sesto the music has time and way to grow up
in intensity and clearness of aim: the knowledge make one free,
stimulates a greater concentration and invites to take more 'risks'.
Pastor and Hug demonstrate here a total control of their technical and
expressive ability. The marvellous Inflesso starts similar to a pizzicato
dripping, more free and asymmetric than the Ligeti's quartets, and soon
appear rasping vocalise by Hug while Pastor intones a tranquil chant,
full of melancholy; a modern, universal blues which, following the
vocals of Hug, folds on itself and restarts to the improvise ending."

Dall’iniziale,
vagamente bachiano e circospetto Catena
al centrale, epigrammatico, A
Tutto Sesto
all’improvvisa chiusa."

"There are not many
contemoporary artists gifted with a so strong personality such as the
two who are meeting here for define a new language on their
instruments, a new kind of communication able to captivate the
listener in short time (...) It's a total dialogue, in which every one
brings his own experiences, visions, disquieting inner daemons and the
result is a music which extends the borders of the known and new
visions appear. In this way it's an enchanting, thrilling recording,
such as for example the duos by Anthony Braxton and the lamented Derek
Bailey; there is not only the research of the new. Something unusual
comes out of the frictions of course, but there also is something
emotionally engaging, able to put a spell on the listener, capturing
him with note and emotions. Something which resounds inside and in
which the voice plays an important role (...) The avantgarde of this
duo is a timless music, an instant catched in the studio, new sounds,
unpredictability. All those things that is difficault to keep
together, things which make the CD much more valuable. "

In tal
momento colto in studio, nuovi suoni, emozioni, imprevedibilità.

- "...the spectacular, improvised duets of these two
masters do not attempt to be perfect structures, musical equivalents of
baroque paragons. These duets suggest newer, inventive means for playing
with sounds, using the studio space and expanding the vocabulary of its
instruments (...) The communication between Hug and Pastor is immediate,
inventive, and profound. The construction of sound and textures is
almost telepathic, making it almost impossible to differentiate the
origins of the sounds of Hug and Pastor's instruments. The intimate
interplay is reflective on common stringed instrument duets but at the
same time exploratory and adventurous in its uncommon architectural
structures, its insistence to articulate its distinct, highly personal
sounds, often eccentric and weird but usually playful. And most
important, its original poetic syntax that is not shy of going beyond
any conventional dimensions of time and space of such duets. Fantastic
duet by true masters.

tali duetti. Un fantastico duo composto da autentici maestri."

- "Theoretically speaking, improvisation should aim
to the removal of any encumbrance that may hinder the path towards an
autonomous manifestation of musical sentience. In Paragone D’Archi
(...) Pastor and Hug look determined to go a step further, namely adding
difficulties to their interaction in order to yield an even more
saw-edged sonic outcome as they establish a method to overcome the
gnashing of teeth emitted by the inexperienced in front of all that
erudite cantankerousness (...) I’m not telling you that this is a
love-at-first-glance work; on the contrary, it requires concentration
and patience for an accurate discernment of its countless hues. That
polymorphic shapes, sulfurous scents and scathing impressions are
conveyed by “just” two akin instruments adds worth to the package,
if the earnestness of the involved names is not sufficient for you to
share this reviewer’s persuasion."

- "Teoricamente parlando
In Paragone d'Archi (...)

- "...a wanderful tableau which
shows the state of play about bow instruments at the present moment. The
pretext is architecture but this work, which goes obliquely through the
territories of the so-called new music and jazz, highlights something
else: all the evolution of the connections between violin and viola (an
alto violin indeed) and its re-invention for the future (...) The use of
extensive techniques, most of those autonomously created, don't dilute
into effects of "bricolage" the atmosphere of
renaissance of these intimist dialogues (...) For sure, if one can't
find compositions here, is clear that there are structures, or at least
leading melodic lines."

- "Charlotte Hug and Stefano Pastor
are both virtuosos and pioneers on their instruments, viola and violin
respectively, and it's fascinating to hear these two masters in the
intimacy of the duo (...) Hug is heard here, as said, on viola (but also
on voice) and Pastor on violin but it is quite difficult to distinguish
between them . Both use alternative techniques to create more or less
uncontroversial sounds, but they still invent melodies through the
jumble of sounds. Especially Pastor is not afraid to play melodically
(...) The interplay between the two is incredible, it's musical
communication at the highest level . (...) They play on rocks and it's
tough music is not derived by any tradition. Hug and Pastor creates
their own tradition (...) Paragone d' Archi is an intense album where virtuosity and interplay meet in an accomplished manner. Hug and Pastor

- "Charlotte Hug e Stefano Pastor
Hug e Pastor
(...) suonano con una tremenda forza (...) Nelle diciassette tracce del

- "Paragone d'archi is a collaboration aimed
at the rebalancing of power relations between violin and viola, namely
the meaning attributed by the musical history of their relations, an
archetype or pamphlet from the past: although titles and cover designs
depict the will to carry out more extensive comparisons that come from
the architecture's field, in this record we find other sensory
coordinates. The musical structure that emerges in "Paragone
d'archi" is an integrative view, that seems to want to give vent to
the instrumental capabilities of the two musicians, projecting the
acoustic rattling in orbits less acculturated of an artistic arch. It's
like taking a walk in a cave of bats in which, however, are banished our
fears about the encounter with that animal specie. In this sense, the
evocative capacity of music is clearly safeguarded. An example of
creativity that can disturb the ears not accustomed to that kind of
listening But ask yourself, how many musicians all around the world
sound like Hug and Pastor?"
