"Each
one here rarely denies to become part of a collective act. So sailing
together they improvise without any fixed structure or, sometimes, use
some composition by the leader creating, even more, a kind of jazz
searched and played by all the musician as a collective jazz"

pulsazione cardiaca dellapercezione condivisa"

- "The disc is actually one of the
best of 2010. It enhances the historical free lesson, seeming to
affirm that the stylistic evolution of that season was too fast (…)
It brings inside the sacred and the profane, tradition and avant-garde
and shows it clearly"

svolta in tempi troppo rapidi (...)

- "You will find the mood of Free
Jazz since you will start to listen to this beautiful disc, played by
an unusual quartet. The saxophone-like and breathe pronounciation of
Pastor is joined here to three excellent musicians and the final
aesthetic shows a clear tribute to the most subversive and discussed
revolution of Jazz History (...) «Freedom»
is a tribute that also
reflects about the congerie of meanings strictly connected to
that era and that season, as the liner notes explain: from the concept
of militancy to the idea of clearing of the given rules. We'd wish to
get more space to reflect
about theese concept, also considerating the (non)-topicality of Free
and the value of discs like this"

"Music of research, research of
music, out of the cliché, out of the obvious spaces (...) A glance to
the free? Demanding of a freedom instead. A freedom looking to
the cahotic complex musical present with the experimental poignancy a
half century old"

- "Freedom without dissonance is
how this quartet session could be defined. Due to the instruments used
– reeds and strings – the tracks are non-linear without being
non-melodic. It’s a tribute to the specifically-assembled quartet
involved that although Freedom won’t alienate many in the fashion of
screaming Energy Music or frigid Minimalism, the uninitiated expecting
soothing backgrounds will be disquieted (...) Even with all four
parallel instrumental lines apparent, the result is layered
concordance rather than muddled cacophony (...) Overall Freedom gives
cerebral sonic freedom a good name"

"It's an original project this
last album by Stefano Pastor: a clearely free style work that in reality
shows many elements of complexity and variety (...) Best ingredient in
the session is the great interplay in developing every single idea; the
four musicians launch into free improvisations, obteining a thoughtful
and contemplative result, with lots of lyric opening, so far from the
muddled and overflowing
representations of free, good for obvious clichés. Listening to it more
and more is even possible to find cells of themes, complex interactions
rising from layered sounds. A strict and coherent album, also permeated
by a clear expressive and ideological honesty"

stereotipi preconfezionati. A ripetuti ascolti è perfino possibile
ideologica"

- "As Pastor writes in the liner notes : 'It is
my belief that, in choosing to play jazz or to relate to jazz, a
musician is bound to feel at ease within the context of a libertarian
and egalitarian culture, namely a revolutionary and popular culture;
he cannot escape it, on grounds of his intellectual consistency'.
And the music on this album has this quality : all musicians are free
to join as and when they see fit, they react spontaneously to themes
thrown into the group, join in unison, or improvise in parallel lines.
The end result is quite charming and even intimate, while also trying
to make the political statement above come true"
- Stef Gijssels - Free Jazz (BE) -

improvvisando in linee parallele. Il risultato finale è assolutamente
incantevole e perfino intimo, proprio mentre l'asserzione politica di
cui sopra si fa verità"

- Freedom
(...) as the title suggests, but above all like the freedom showed by
the four terrific musicians (...) 'Emancipatin' is a kind of hypnotic
and enveloping impro-gospel which brings you from the beginning and
never leaves untill the end. In 'Oppositions' reigns a rarefied mood
which makes to think to something ancestral, a sort of metaphysical
blues, a contemporary lament who draws life from the past"

in campo dai quattro formidabili musicisti (...)

"'Let's consider jazz
tantamount to a music originating in the songs of the enslaved Black
American people; this original music, the embryo of an African-American
culture, worked as a vehicle for the people's dreams of freedom'.
These are the words written by
Stefano Pastor in his treatise about improvisation and jazz violin and
they also fit as introduction to the CD (...) A music which strongly
remind to free jazz of the Sixties"

"...the
British label normally produces radical free music, on the contrary the
quartet led by the violinist Stefano Pastor - involving two saxes
(George Haslam and Claudio Lugo) and a double bass (Giorgio Dini) -
recovers musicality, a strong sense of melody, rhythmic severity, not
renouncing to moments of absoulute free expression, according
to the anti-dogma of the European 'improvised music'. This originates a
disc which results doubly out of any convention. This is why this is a
truly very interesting disc."

"...rispetto
all'estremismo sonoro della label britannica,

- "...'Freedom'
features an interesting instrumental line-up with two reeds (bari
& soprano saxes) and two strings (violin & double bass), both
from opposite ends of the sound spectrum. This is not just another
"free improv" session, since there are some sketches or
charts involved from what I can hear. Bassist Giorgio Dini does a
great job of holding down the rhythm section role by pumping lines,
occasionally at a furious pace. There is a constant layer of lines
that intersect and interact, shift and move together like currents in
the ocean (...) there is some amazingly tight interplay here. The
magic here is when one of the players begins a line the others
harmonize with it instantly creating superb shifting shades and
focused ideas. What I find most interesting is when they end up in
some sublime, melodic and what sounds like partially charted sections.
There is calm center to much of this which makes this set often
thoughtful and haunting."

"...'Freedom'
casi posizionati agli estremi opposti dell'estensione sonora.
e interagiscono, spostandosi e muovendosi insieme come correnti
nell'oceano (...)
armonizzano istantaneamente, creando superbi spostamenti d'ombre e idee
ben definite.
